What tours are available?

There are several routes departing from the center of Ponta Delgada: Historical: this route covers many of the city's emblematic/historical landmarks;

Gardens: a visit to many of the city's most beautiful gardens;

Beaches: a relaxing tour along the southern coast of Ponta Delgada;

Pineapple Plantation: this route covers many of the city's emblematic/historical landmarks and includes a guided visit to a pineapple plantation;

Regional Tasting: this route covers many of the city's emblematic/historical landmarks and includes a small tasting of regional products at Hotel Gaivota.

What are the tours schedules?

Tours run daily at the following times:

Historical: 10:30 AM and 1:30 PM

Gardens: 9:30 AM, 11:30 AM (available only during low season) and 2:30 PM

Beaches: 11:30 AM (beach tours are available only during high summer season)

Pineapple Plantation: 3:30 PM

Regional Tasting: by reservation

Lagarta - Animação Turística management reserves the right to change these schedules if necessary due to weather conditions, logistical issues or demand.

Where do the tours depart from?

All circuits, except special bookings (which have designated departure points), start and end at the Lagarta kiosk located along the waterfront avenue, next to Campo de São Francisco (located in front of the historic São Brás fort).

Where can I buy tickets?

Tickets can be purchased on our website or before your trip at the Lagarta kiosk. Opening hours: every day between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

What do I need to bring for the Lagarta tours?

Participants are encouraged to bring headphones and a smartphone to listen to our audio guide. We also have headphones available for purchase and small tablets (free rental) for those who don't have a smartphone. And, of course, a camera if you want to capture memories of your trip.

How much does a ticket for a circuit cost? Are there discounts for children or seniors?

Most circuits are €8 per person. The exception is the historical tour with a visit to the pineapple plantation (€10 per person) and the tasting experience which is upon request.

We offer special prices for groups of 10 people or more, and we have discounts for children, seniors, or individuals who request more than one tour during their experience. Children up to 2 years old travel for free.

How long do the tours last?

On average, the tours take about 50 minutes, except for the tours that include a visit to the pineapple plantation or the tasting of regional products (which lasts one hour and 30 minutes).

Can I get on or off the tour in the middle of the circuit?

Unfortunately not. With the exception of the tour that includes a visit to the pineapple plantation or the tasting of regional products, the circuits do not allow stops, nor passengers getting on or off in the middle of the route. Boarding and exiting the tour are only carried out at the kiosk.

Do I have to book in advance?

A reservation is not required, but the trip on Lagarta is subject to availability.

What payment methods can I use?

On the website: the online payment methods indicated.

At the kiosk: cash only.

Reservations made in advance: by bank transfer, before the date of the tour.

Is there any additional information about the tours?

Currently, we have an audio guide recording in Portuguese and English that explains the locations along the circuits.

May I take photos during the tours?

Yes, taking photos is allowed and encouraged during our tours! We encourage our participants to share their photos on our social media accounts:

Is the road train covered or open-air?

Neste momento, we do not have convertible carriages.

Currently, we have only one train in operation, equipped with carriages that are open on the sides and can be fully closed with tarpaulins, depending on weather conditions.

Can I bring something to eat or drink during the tour?

Yes. Also, if you prefer, you can purchase something at our kiosk.

What is the maximum capacity of your train?

At the moment, we only have the “open train” in operation, with a maximum capacity of 36 people.

In which areas of São Miguel do you accept reservations?

We currently accept reservations throughout the island, as long as the road train can travel the route.

Due to the size of the train, Lagarta - Historic Train management will only confirm the reservation after testing the intended route, to ensure the safety of its passengers.

Is it possible to decorate the road train?

Yes, as long as it does not damage it.

If I want to book the train for an event, how can I pay?

For pre-defined or customized guided tours, the contractor must pay 20% of the value before confirming the reservation. This amount is non-refundable. The remaining amount is required on the day of the event.

What if I can’t make the reservation on the scheduled date?

Contractors must notify in advance and, if possible, provide an alternative day for the tour. If this is not possible, 80% of the total reservation amount will be refunded.
